Portrait of My Son Through The Viewfinder of My Grandfather's Voigtlander Compur by

This photograph is very special to me.

In my hand I hold my Grandfather’s 90 year old vintage Voigtlander Compur folding camera that he bought in Germany in the 1920’s and I’ve taken a photograph of my son through the tiny viewfinder. I cannot articulate the emotions this stirs in me.

I bet my grandfather never imagined that one day, in another century, his beloved camera would be used by his granddaughter (who he never knew) to photograph his great grandson.

I’m a sentimental fool…….!

Great picture! And perfetly okay to be as sentimental a fool as you want.

  • Thanks so much Tama, I can’t help myself, it gives me goosebumps when I think about it. My Grandfather died long before I was born but one of my uncles saved the camera and gave it to me many years ago, I treasure it.

so special sylvia….. the image & words ……feeling the love xx :)

  • Hi Deb, I’ve been couped up indoors with the flu and so I pulled the old camera out yesterday for something to do. I get sentimental everytime I hold this camera and I’m thrilled to have managed to take a shot of my son with it. The viewfinder is about 1cm sq, tiny!
    Appreciate your lovely words.

    very cool!!!
my dad had one of these cameras. i guess i was four at the time but i took it a-part,
wanted to see if the image was inside the box… dad was not very happy. that’s what started me
    with photography. :)

  • It’s amazing the memories and sentiments these gorgeous old cameras can stir. Thanks for sharing your story woof, it’s wonderful, something I probably would have done as a kid too………. “where’d the picture go?”

  • It is amazing isn’t it. I’ve thought of that too, imagine trying to explain the internet to them? Appreciate your lovely comment.
