Great Expectations

From a series of photographs I did for a friend 5 weeks before the birth of her daughter!

This photograph was taken using super fast film (3200) and low light conditions.

I was going through a grainy stage!! :D

Thank you Jo! they sure are, although they can still be quite confronting to some people! I had very funny reactions from some older women when I exhibited these pictures. One just shook her head and walked away in disgust! heheheh :D

  • Kitsmumma

Hey Dennis and thank you. I achieved this effect by using super fast film (3200) and low light conditions. This gives you a wonderfully grainy finish. My model had to sit very still and of course I had to use a tripod. That is about it. :D

Hey Damian, I know, but they are from another time and place. I felt a bit sad for them. Made me wonder what their experiences of pregnancy would have been like :O Thanks heaps!

  • Kitsmumma

    Kitsmumma

Hi Brett, thank you! so much :D I was going through a serious grainy period when I took these and I have always loved high contrast B&W. I also love working in low light conditions and never use a flash, dont even own one! Thanks heaps! :D

Hey there. Are you aware of the interesting and controversial thread re this piece Sylvia? It wouldn’t be right if we knew about it and you didn’t. Controversy and exploring through discussion is good – thats when you know your onto something :)))

Kitsmumma I’ve been following the thread about your image and have just read your response! It was wonderful although the image says it all without the words. What makes your image so powerful is that it not only relates to women but it also communicates to others who might not want to know the other side of the cliche’.
And while women are so ready to speak about the euphoria of pregnancy and childbirth the true basic animal nature of the process is rarely touched upon, this gives the outsider an unbalanced view and your image ventures to regain the equilibrium.
Jay may not like your image but I’m sure it has made such an impact that it is an image he wont readily forget!
    Power to you!!!!

on a second note, having just read your post in jay’s thread….
This, to me, is a representation of her hopes, dreams, expectations, the trepidation, the self doubt but mostly her fear of the unknown, the act of childbirth, the surrendering of ones self to the greater forces of nature and life.

Not having been through this experience yet, nor had any close friends who have yet, I had not seen the darkness in this image that you are alluding to. when I read the above quote, the 1st thing that came to mind was something that my mother is always telling me fear is just excitement turned inside out ... and darkness is there to clarify the light.
I still think it is a beautiful image…

I love your pictures and I must say, out of red bubble, you are my favourite photografer!
Back to the picture (great expectations) I love the shot and the projection of the woman body as a body and not as a sexy object, but also reminds me of one of my pictures wich I will put on red bubble rigth after this comment on your great (great expectations).

  • Kitsmumma

    Kitsmumma

Hi marco, I am so flattered by your comment, I don’t quite know what to say, but…...........thank you. That is such an enourmous compliment and I can’t quite believe it, but thank you so much, I’m so honoured.

In regard to this image, I really just wanted to keep it ‘real’ as the human body is beautiful in any shape or form, well to me anyway, and I also hoped it would convey somehow the mixed feelings and emotions that are the reality of childbirth, if that makes sense.

I’m off to have a look at your work…..........................
