On the eve of winter solstice, my husband and I went for a walk. On these barren tree branches, we found this lone hummingbird fixed to the branch, fixed and perched. His head would move this way and that in the way hummingbirds do and I remember thinking it was strange and beautiful: that so small a creature should so defiantly stand on his branch in spite of the elements and remind me that though the days are dark and cold, spring is coming.
