Artist's Description

Known also as barnyard grass; this millet relative occurs from Boreal Moist to Wet through Tropical Very Dry to Moist Forest Life Zones.

Can adapt to nearly all types of wet places including growing standing in water but it can colonize all kinds of disturbed, hot, dry environments as a ruderal wed as well.
Cultivated as cattle fodder and its hay can be stored for years but where its presence is not desirable, Echinocloa crus-galli is one of the worst kind of weed.

Young shots and its grain are consumed as human food from the Philippines to India and there are very many locally popular herbal medicine uses of this plant as well.
