Artist's Description

Grows on forest floors rich in humus in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere, flowers in the spring. Also known as Kidneywort or Pennywort.

Relatively recently the Hepatica and the closely related Anemone genera have been revised and arguments put forward promoting the concept that Hepatica species should be lumped together with Anemone species under the latter name.

The issue is still “unresolved” (read: the recent arguments ring all too hollow) but anyway, either Hepatica or Anemone nobilis was used in herbal medicine to treat liver (hepar in Latin) problems, pimples, bronchitis and gout.
