Grey Clubrush - Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani

Cosmopolitan wetland plant occurring all over the continents save the extreme North.
The tender base of the stem is edible in salads, the roots provides a sweet syrup, which ihas diuretic and astringent effects. The poultice of the stem pith placed under a dressing helps in stopping wounds bleeding.
Dried stems are used in basketry and in making good quality mats.
It can grow in water up to 1m deep and as that is shown on the painting, it is an aggressive weed in waterlogged maize and other cultures.
The form sporting yellow stripes along the stems is cultivated as an ornamental.
