Nowadays “orchid” for most people means the Phalaenopsis or Doritaenopsis (Doritis X Phalaenopsis) hybrids mass-produced predominantly in SE Asia like they were consumable, even disposable “vegetables” .
In the romantic, XIXth Century heydays of orchid mania “orchid” meant first and above of all Cattleya labiata and its closest relatives.
