Artist's Description

These shapes, figures and shadows — not to mention the ubiquitous Willys jeep — made to me parts of an interesting design. I use sickening colors, that is, a red magenta, alternated with a lime green — and orange for the warm back-lighting in the shadows on the crates — to suggest the gut-wrenching horror of preparing for battle, which these fellows probably knew was going to be hell. From a black and white U.S. Marine Corps photograph of American G.I.s unloading ammunition during the assault on tightly-held Tarawa Island in the Gilbert Islands in the southwest Pacific, in WWII. Crayon, 9″ × 11″.
