Members of the Falling Whistles group from Las Angeles, CA along with supporters from Occupy D.C. join for a peacefull march on the White House to bring awareness to the war that rages in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Children are being taken by rebel forces as in Sierra Leone, West Africa and forced to fight on the front lines. Some, being to small to hold rifles, they are given whistles to blow when troops arrive only to be cut down and used as shields by the same rebel forces that abducted them. ( this is why you see the members wearing whistles around their necks in my photo’s )
Over the last decade, more than 6 million people have died and thousands continue to loose their lives daily over the vast minerals found in Congo. Minerals commonly used in consumer electronics such as laptop computers and cell phones.
While many benefit from the mineral trade, it is the Congolese people who bear the brunt of a conflict that is fueled by marauding rebel forces and a corrupt government.
This is a small series of candid moments from this event on 11/21/2011 at the White House in Washington D.C.
