Eternity

Eternity

Atop mount Emei, one of four sacred buddhist mountains in China, a couple or two friends seal their partnership for eternity by locking a padlock on the summit and then throwing the keys in to the abys.
the locks then remain forevermore, and even though their names have rusted off, they will be permanently joined in eternity.

You do know that this is probably one of my most favourite photos of all time? It stood out in my mind so vividly out of all those fantastic photos. Its probably because of its meaning… you should write it in your description. Beautiful work!

Also a similar thing is done in Japan at Enoshima (a very small islans near Kamakura) where lovers go and ring a bell overlooking the sea, then they add their locks to seal their love for one another.

niceeee.. love the composition why are there so many padlocks?

  • Joaquin Loyzaga replied

thanks! its a buddhist tradition where you close a padlock atop the mountain to seal a relationship or marriage and once locked, symbolically throw the keys of the edge of the cliff so the lock can never be broken.
    isnt it a great tradition!

It’s a good shot Joaquin and you used the right DOF. I got much the same sort of images at the top of Mt Hua in China (another of the sacred mounatins). There were also heaps of red ribbons up there.
