Artist's Description

This is another acrylic painting 20 × 40cm

Inspired by the myth of Ariadne, this painting depicts her realization she’s been left behind after her lover Theseus has sailed in the night (while she slept).

It’s an interesting myth, and am not sure I am overly on her side; she helped Theseus slay the minotaur by giving him thread to find his way back out of the minotaur’s labyrinth. The minotaur is her family, or at least, half her blood, so she’s sorta betrayed her own family – even though he is a monster!

The black rose is a symbol of death, hatred, revenge, sorrow or mourning. It can also be used when conveying a farewell (wiki) and I thought it the appropriate flower for this jilted lover. I also put the constellation of her crown kinda faintly in the background, she didn’t do too badly in the end with Dionysius falling in love with her.
