This is an ACEO size painting that I did recently to study my favourite artist J W Waterhouse. I have, among many of his books, a little tiny pocket size book of his works, and there was a detail of Echo that caught my eye.

The story of Echo is that she was punished by some goddess for her non stop chattering, she was forced to repeat the words of others. She was in love with Narcissus who sadly for her, was only in love with himself. He saw his reflection in some water and there he stayed, gazing at himself till he was no more! Echo, stoooopid girl, pined for him till she too was no more… except for her voice. Echo.

All Products

study, myth, redhead, nymph, echo, waterhouse

Australian painter of winged whimsies; I love faeries, angels, mermaids, princesses, myth, gods & goddesses, cupcakes, colour…

I paint on canvas in acrylic mostly, but sometimes the watercolours come out for a less controlled splash.

oh Kim…wow freaking weee this is gorgeous!!!!!! sigh….who can’t love Waterhouse!!! Hun, her face is so beautiful. you have truly captured one amazing work here

  • Aw thank you Tahnja, so lovely as always =) I don’t think I can take any credit, cos it’s just a ‘study’, but I have to say it was lovely to do. Every work of his is just magic. And you know, I read somewhere that when he was alive, his art was not always in ‘favour’ and he could hardly give them away. GAK. So sad to read that. But thanks for your kind comment x

Kim beautiful job! You achieved such a softness with her. I know it is study but it is an alive work on it’s own!
Now can we talk WATERHOUSE for a minute-he is one of my favorite artists too. I went to an exhibit of his work in Montreal last year and was so blown away. He is so talented and inspirational. :) Margot

  • Thanks Margot, appreciate that, it was such a pretty ‘section of’ I really tried to capture the feeling, so it’s great to hear! Aww that exhibit would have been wonderful, it would have been an enjoyable visual overload am sure, just how can one person paint so many magical works?? I got to see two of his in the Tate in London years ago, and I couldn’t stop staring trying to read how he created. Thanks again for commenting ;)
