St. Mary’s Church in St. Francisville LouisianaThis dramatic old Gothic church was built in 1857 and served 20 plantation homes who lived in the Tunic Area (old Indian grounds) in South Louisiana. It was abandoned in 1947.
I love the perspective here, Kimberly, and the colors! Even though the church has been abandoned, there is still a sense of worship. I’ve been to St. Francisville many a time, but I missed this somehow. Wonderful find and wonderful photo! This one really speaks to me. LOVE IT!
Thank you so much, it is one of my favorites, it is a beautiful place.
Thank you so much Ms. Bonnie. It is an amazing old church. Many people do not know about it due to the remote location. It is located on the road that brings you to the Louisiana Angola State Prison, going toward the prison, it is on the right hand side of the road, in the woods. You can see it, if you are looking for it, but only in the winter, when the leaves and brush are dead. You will only see that there is something back there from your car. You will have to park and take a little hike, but it is worth it. Of course if says, No Trespassing, This is due to people damaging the property, and of course, neither of us would never damage anything, especially of such beauty and spirit. St. Mary Church was a country mission of Grace Episcopal Church, also in St. Franciville. (this is also a must see church and cemetery, very old and strong) The members of Grace Church still go there once a year to celebrate services, so you are correct, there is still worship and love that remains.
Thank you God!
