Putting On A Brave Face
Original was pencil, ink drawing. Wouldn’t you love to do be able to do this sometimes? Often we are required to put on a face that does not reflect how we feel. This is kind of the idea that we can do this and still keep the integrity of our real feelings below.

That is so weird that you painted this – I wrote a poem about putting on faces just like this a couple of years ago – this is exactly what was in my mind at the time!

Eyes closed and a small smile turned into eyes open wide and a large smile, what the world really wants to see. But truthfully, the guy behind the mask doesn’t look that “un-brave”. That’s the thing about putting on a brave face, usually what we think of ourselves or what we think others will see really isn’t so bad at all.
I like your style.

This is such an obvious statement and yet you have done it uniquely. It is also a sad subject really, yet you have made the image sweet. Great work. Somehow it is hopeful.

Really interesting concept and one close to my heart. I believe so many of us put up great brave faces and a variety of other ones that do not reflect how we are feeling. I think that no matter what face we put on we cannot stop others from being affected by how we feel. I believe we would all be much healthier if we stopped protecting our emotions. I actually think much of the mental ilness and childhood ills like ADHD are stimulated by people not being honest about how they are feeling and hiding behind strong or confident or happy faces.
Best Wishes Tony.

Hmm.. I had a pencil and ink drawing that this reminds me of. I think it is all the way gone, now, even the bad scan of it, though.
It was crudely done, mostly because I tried to color it in with markers and they were crap; and people kept jostling me. Sometimes I feel like I must be Rodney Dangerfield’s love child!
Was a line of several woman, gave the feel of a line of dancers at first, but when you looked closer it was revealed that some of the swirling robes and such on the “women” really came from the real women behind or in front of them .. and half of the women standing there were really just well decorated masks on long poles. Some looked sad, some mad, but none looked like the woman behind them because it was all about show: fashion and society versus humanity.
I miss it, but am very unlikely to attempt it again because I can still see it in my mnd’s eye and I know what it should look like, but I could never actually recreate it.
I like this very much, in it’s own right, by your own meaning, and also for what it reminds me of.

This is a fabulous work and you are such a talented artist. As one who “puts on a brave face” often I can so relate to this.
