Dust storm 02-04-2008 - South Gippsland coast.

I took this photograph last week (02-04-2008) on the day that gale force northerly winds ripped through the state of Victoria. The winds raised dust in the north west to central west of the state, some of which eventually blew into Bass Strait.
Here on the South Gippsland coast the blanket of red-brown dust approaches and crosses Bass Strait ahead of the rainband. I had to find a place of relative shelter from the 100km/h winds to capture this amazing scene before me. With the shores protected from the winds by the towering cliffs the water several hundred meters offshore was almost a blur with ‘reverse’ whitecaps. The ocean took on an incredible cobalt blue colour whilst the sky looked eerie and from another planet.
