a night with the stars...

a night with the stars...

recommended – click image for a better view

Another photograph that has been years in the waiting for everything to fall into alignment – this time the elements required were:
- night with a northerly wind to keep out any moist or damp air and blow back any salty spray/mist. fogging up the lens.
- no moon.
- no clouds.
- a high tide.
- it be warm/hot enough for me not to freeze.
- no work the following day.

A combination that is not easy to get on Victoria’s South Gippsland coastline….

In the photograph you will see an almost diagonal line across the star trails formed by a spectacular meteorite as it blazed across the night sky.

A stunning image, if you don’t mind me asking Iwould like to hear how you got the lighting in the foreground. I have seen star trails in the past and like this one, the ones that really work are the ones that have an interesting and well lit foreground.

  • Tony Middleton replied

thanks for your comments Maree and David – much appreciated :)

The lighting was acheived with a 10million candle power portable spotlight for a short and varied duration which I also had to lug down the cliffs in the dark .. all good fun :P

I’m glad you like the result :)

  • Tony Middleton replied

hi Luke – thanks for viewing and commenting :)

For this particular shot the exposure was approximately 5hours – I was planning it to be a bit longer but the camera batteries went flat ! lol

I was wondering about the lighting and exposure time, 5 hours, hardcore, I’ve tried one of these myself not as good as yours but, surprised by the Velvia 50, I would of thought a higher sensitivity would give you brighter star trails, although I grant you they are pretty bright, but hey what would I know, love the image.

Tony this is an amazing shot, and well worth every effort that you went through to get it on film. I am going to try the same sort of shot up here in the north once the wet passes. Can I ask what was your F stop for this shot as I use velvia in my photography.

Oh this is a really great work! (not only the resulting photograph; you were apparently very well prepared :))
Are the light trails on the sky really that colorful? Never seen before! I wonder how long was the exposure… How did you set it right? – from the long trails I guess you haven’t had much time to bracket ;)

  • Tony Middleton replied

hi Lenka – thanks for the comment :)
The colours in the shot are 100% natural. As i have stated a couple of times above the exposure time was around 5hours…So no time for bracketing. I worked out the exposure through experience of doing these for many years.
    Glad you like it !

    :)

  • Lenka

    Lenka

Sorry I haven’t read all the comments before…
Yes I do like it so much! The photograph is amazing really. I do believe the colours are natural, it is just surprising to see so many colours – great that such a photograph can be taken to show us the beauty :) It’s good to have an experience to be able to make a photo like this ;)
And now I can understand very well why you wanted a warm enough night :)))
