a night with the stars...
recommended – click image for a better view
Another photograph that has been years in the waiting for everything to fall into alignment – this time the elements required were:
- night with a northerly wind to keep out any moist or damp air and blow back any salty spray/mist. fogging up the lens.
- no moon.
- no clouds.
- a high tide.
- it be warm/hot enough for me not to freeze.
- no work the following day.
A combination that is not easy to get on Victoria’s South Gippsland coastline….
In the photograph you will see an almost diagonal line across the star trails formed by a spectacular meteorite as it blazed across the night sky.
EOS A2, Fuji Velvia 50.

Absolutely amazing, stunning awesome shot Tony

A stunning image, if you don’t mind me asking Iwould like to hear how you got the lighting in the foreground. I have seen star trails in the past and like this one, the ones that really work are the ones that have an interesting and well lit foreground.

Great shot tony! i’m very jealous. Can i ask what exposure time you used, and what aperture?
Tony Middleton in reply to David Haviland’s comment, 6 months ago
thanks for your comments Maree and David – much appreciated :)
The lighting was acheived with a 10million candle power portable spotlight for a short and varied duration which I also had to lug down the cliffs in the dark .. all good fun :P
I’m glad you like the result :)
Tony Middleton in reply to Luke Meers’s comment, 6 months ago
hi Luke – thanks for viewing and commenting :)
For this particular shot the exposure was approximately 5hours – I was planning it to be a bit longer but the camera batteries went flat ! lol

Absolutely out of this world!!! amazing!!

I was wondering about the lighting and exposure time, 5 hours, hardcore, I’ve tried one of these myself not as good as yours but, surprised by the Velvia 50, I would of thought a higher sensitivity would give you brighter star trails, although I grant you they are pretty bright, but hey what would I know, love the image.

Bloody awesome. There is way too much “point and shoot and shoot and shoot…..” in this digital age. It’s great to see some one take the time and effort to get a REALLY good shot on film.
Kudos to you Mr M.

Whoa I know just how hard to get all these elements to converge and man has it paid off – beautiful image – love the light painting – it complements the startrails beautifully and that meteor – the gods were definitely smiling on you this night.

Tony this is an amazing shot, and well worth every effort that you went through to get it on film. I am going to try the same sort of shot up here in the north once the wet passes. Can I ask what was your F stop for this shot as I use velvia in my photography.

Congratulations for all the effort – a choice result.

Oh this is a really great work! (not only the resulting photograph; you were apparently very well prepared :))
Are the light trails on the sky really that colorful? Never seen before! I wonder how long was the exposure… How did you set it right? – from the long trails I guess you haven’t had much time to bracket ;)
Tony Middleton in reply to Lenka’s comment, 4 months ago
hi Lenka – thanks for the comment :)
The colours in the shot are 100% natural. As i have stated a couple of times above the exposure time was around 5hours…So no time for bracketing. I worked out the exposure through experience of doing these for many years.
Glad you like it !
:)
Lenka, 4 months ago
Sorry I haven’t read all the comments before…
Yes I do like it so much! The photograph is amazing really. I do believe the colours are natural, it is just surprising to see so many colours – great that such a photograph can be taken to show us the beauty :) It’s good to have an experience to be able to make a photo like this ;)
And now I can understand very well why you wanted a warm enough night :)))
