Staccato lightning
This is a great example of a staccato cloud to ground lightning strike (in this case cloud to sea). Staccato cloud-to-ground lightning is perhaps the most photogenic of all lightning. It is termed “staccato” because the lightning is comprised of just one single, rapid discharge and is typically accompanied by a myriad of interesting and intricate branching.
I caught this one at 5am just off the Warrnambool coast a couple of weeks ago – very nice !

That’s awesome Tony. How did you do it? Long exposure? Timing? Continuous shooting? I ask because I visit my brother a bit in colorado where they have amazing storms sometimes daily and I’d love any advice I can get. Great shot!
Tony Middleton replied
thanks Melinda ! Colorado gets plenty of awesome storms so just keep trying at the active par of the storm and get your timing right and you’ll get some crackers ! :)
