Ben’s Chili Bowl; a local landmark in D.C. since the late ’50s and favorite haunt of Bill Cosby when in town.
Just one of the many pics I snapped while exploring the U Street corridor.

Fantastic color Krystal…these landmark eateries always seem to have such wonderful graphics too. :-)
I love how the graphics really span the decades it’s been open. It’s slightly gaudy with all the contrasting styles but at the same time the history unconsciously spoken through the different font types brings a certain charm to the superfluousness of it all.
I read up more about Ben’s and the U street area; I must definitely go back for a full day or two of shooting—SO much social history there. Plus, there was a row of brownstones just a half a block down from Ben’s that made me think of your Hoboken shot AND one of them had a funky animal statue sitting on their roof looking down onto the people on the street; I couldn’t help but laugh aloud when I spotted it.

P.S. Thank you for the favorite! :)
this is a striking photo, so much colour and detail…excellent
Thank you, James! I love that you dig it. :)
I want to go eat there. You just made me hungry!
Awesome, my work is done! hehe. If you’re ever up in this area, def check it out—super tasty! :)
I wonder if there are enough SIGNS??? Good find!
I’m glad they do—tells a part of their history, adds to their character and believe it or not, they’re actually pretty cramped in in the U Street Corridor so it makes it a ton easier to find them with all these signs! :)
Excellent image and now I want chili:)))
Thanks, Karen! If you’re ever in DC, you’ve got to try their chili—it’s got a lil kick to it. :)
