I love this photo as I think it sums up Songkran – Madness, water, beer, happy tidings, laughter, more water, more beer and a city high on good times!

Everyone once in their life should experience this festival! We did in Chiang Mai. The town turns into one massive water fight for three days, Thanks to Jo the bar tender for sharing his water bucket with us!

Nice action shot – how did the camera enjoy the water treatment?

  • Luckily it was Paul’s new Olympus point and shoot in an underwater housing!! The day before Songkran began I was out and about with my D200 on my back. There were a few early revellers and I had to plead with them not to water the camera. Luckily I escaped unscathed and got back to the hotel and hid the D200 until Songkran was well and truly over!!

You have captured the moment brilliantly. I keep reaching for a towel. It keeps my interest for a long time, looking at all the parts of this shot. Another Khosie Klassic!!!

  • Thanks xena!!!

I’ve SongKran-ed in Chiang Mai on a number of occasions over the years. Great fun but don’t even dream of doing anything sensible or serious for those few days. Not just the city, but the whole area for miles around goes mad. One word of warning to those who might go: cameras and bucket after bucket of water don’t mix. If you must take a camera try to keep it sealed in a plastic bag of some sort, and only take it out when it’s safe to do so.
    Have fun!!
    Pete

  • Hehehhe. You are so right… westerners honestly don’t get that this is a water fight from hell! Really well intentioned and done with such good grace but PUT YOUR CAMERA AWAY if not waterproof! I was the same the day before and nearly got caught out from some early revellers!!!

fantastic photo! I love the expression on the girl’s face and how you froze the water. spent songkran in Bangkok but due to the riots, nothing was happening :( x

  • Hi Kaylea, wish you could have been up in Chiang Mai, we watched what was happening with the red shirts on the web. xoxox Hope you had a great time in Thailand despite this!
