The picturesque ruins of Whitby Abbey in Yorkshire, UK
Whitby Abbey is a ruined Benedictine Abbey set on a headland high over the popular seaside town of Whitby and these supremely romantic ruins enjoy panoramic views over the town and coastline.
Work probably began on this building in the early 13th century, but there was an earlier, much smaller, church on the site, dating from the late 11th century. The foundation lines of the older building are still visible in the grass.
The very first monastery here was founded in 657 AD by the Anglo-Saxon King of Northumbria, Oswy (Oswiu). This was a double (women and men) Celtic monastery ruled over by St Hild.
The Abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII in the 16th century.
