Entrance to Tokugawa Yoshinobu Haka - Japan

Norman Repacholi

Melbourne, Australia

Artist's Description

What lies beyond the delicately adorned gate is the tomb of Tokunaga Yoshinobu, the 15th shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate.

I was wondering why the Yanaka cemetery was such a busy place, but I’ve been told that that many people enjoy visiting memorial sites and that there is a name for people that like to visit tombs – ‘haka-mairar’ – because it’s becoming an increasingly popular passtime to visit the sites of respected people that have passed away.
