Intramuros is the oldest and perhaps the most famous district of Manila. The ‘Walled City’ was constructed by the Spanish in the 16th century to protect the city from incursions by the British and Dutch, not to mention Chinese pirates.
The stone walls surrounding the district are more than 2m thick and up to 7m high in parts.
While wandering around Intramuros, this inquisitive cat was calmly observing what I was up to and didn’t mind posing for a portrait.
The Global Heritage Fund has listed Intramuros as one of 12 historically and culturally significant sites around the world at risk of loss or destruction.
