Abandoned Bunkhouse by Kent Brewer

Abandoned Bunkhouse by

Watercolor on 13″ × 20″ 140# Arches CP. Completed March 10, 2009 from a photo I took in 1994. This old bunkhouse sits next to a hiking trail in the San Juan Mountains of SW Colorado near Ouray. Inside, it had a big old heavy stove that must have been an incredibly difficult chore to get up this narrow and very high trail by mule. If you were a miner and tended to walk in your sleep it was best to be strapped into your bunk.

I got a little wild with the splatter, but they made a nice opportunity for soaring birds high in the mountain sky.

This is beautiful. I love your work. The colors are stunning.

  • Thank you Sandi. This is an example of a painting that I felt was going badly so I changed my approach mid-way through to a messy, go-for-it mentality. It’s hard for me to let go and be loose.

A beautiful piece, Kent! I really like the way you’ve handled the shadows – they’re very realistic, and their colors are right on! A fave for sure! – Pat
