Very nicely composed with just the right amount of dof and perfect exposure! The yellow background effectively compliments the color of the cat’s eyes! The soft green foliage works wonderfully to frame the subject!

  • Ken Haley replied

Thanks, Sandy. My desired effect here was to balance the natural colors with the intrusion of the black cat (our Porter, who is probably a lot like your black cat). I didn’t center on the cat, but I think the eye is pulled that way. I probably broke some composition rules, but the comments have been supportive.

I’m glad you didn’t center your cat, because more often than not, a photo can be classified as “static” when a subject is framed in the center. Of course there are always exceptions to the centering rule! lol I don’t go by all the rules of photography, like for example, the thirds rule, but instead I think of photography as a form of art and so I try to frame my subjects as if they were a piece of artwork. lol This is a very nicely composed and balanced composition by all aspects!!! :) Oh and yes, your Porter very much resembles our cat Pepper! :)
