Munich, Germany Sep 2006.
I had the pleasure of attending Oktoberfest in Munich last year.
Growing up in Australia, I used to watch highlights of events in other countries on the nightly news which seemed like so much fun, foreign and inaccessible. The vast majority of the celebrations and events I’ve been to so far have not let me down and Oktoberfest was no different.
Most people, rightly, think of beer when they think of Oktoberfest and I certainly have my beer stories of my time there. But for those who haven’t been, the event is more than just one big piss up. It’s an annual event which started off as being a town’s celebration for a marriage between two important people (or something like that) which over almost two centuries, has become just an excuse just to have fun. As a result, travellers, families and locals, gather for two weeks every September (despite the name) for this world-famous carnival.
This photo shows that all people, young and old, will be guaranteed a good time at Oktoberfest. No matter your walk of life – even if you don’t like beer – there is much to be enjoyed.
I would thoroughly recommend making the effort to go if you can.
