A Blurry Line

This is probably a constant topic of my entries but again I find myself asking what is the difference between a photograph and art?

Ignoring the very abstract and studio shots, how is one photograph artistic and not just another postcard shot?

Any opinions?

Composition, moodiness, if a photograph makes you feel something, and not just “oh, that’s nice”. I love photos that create an emotion – or invokes a memory.

    Just my 2c worth!

The term “postcard shot” needs to be defined. To my eyes a beautiful landscape shot which is a representation of a particular area and is technically and compositionally well created can be art even if it is a shot that could readily be put on a postcard or calender. Alain Briot (beautiful-landscapes.com) considers his work art and he produces simply wonderful landscape photo’s that have not been manipulated excessively in PS yet some people might say they are also postcard shots.

The answer is that art is in the eyes of the beholder. Some of the modern art that goes around these days I would consider definatly NOT art yet it sells for thousands.

There probably isn’t a differentiation that can be made across the board. One mand trash is anothers treasure.

However if I had to define the difference it would be in the intent of the person taking it.

I believe that photography is simply another medium available to the artist. There are certain skills (both technical and artistic) required to record or manipulate the subject / scene in order to obtain the desired image.

If you gave Picasso a camera, he might use it in his form studies alongside his sketches … same with Monet ... his fav would have to be the blur tool:)
