Hummer Profile in Flight

This guy swam in front of the lens just as I clicked the shutter. I think he was doing the free stroke.

Now my guess is that these birds are difficult to capture in flight because they are so fast but on this occasion you have done an outstanding job with this picture, it must have been a very fast shutter, what kind of lens do you use. I love it.

Thanks Carol. I use a micro Nikkor 1:2.8 with a Nikon D80. The macro lens is not compatible electronically with the D80 (it’s 20 years old) so I use manual focus, shutter speed and aperature adjustments. I have a feeder set up with a comfortable chair next to it. When the birds get comfortable with my presence I manually focus whee I think the focal plane will be and start shooting when anything flys through it. One out of ten shots are good and one out of fifty are great; glad there is digital photography and a delete feature lol. The shutter speeds I use are between 1/500 and 1/2000…I think this was 1/1250. Hope this answers your question/curiosity. Regards, Ken

Wow your hummingbird shots are just amazing ! I have a journal about bird shots….........if you want to share any advise …..........I would love to hear it :)

  • Ken Aitchison replied

Wow; Thanks! It’s pretty much about patience with these guys with a little know how. Set up a feeder and a comfortable chair or even a lounge to lay down on. Cover your head and torso with a towel. I get 2 to 3 feet away with a manual macro lens. I preset the manual focus to where I anticipate the bird will be (you will see their patterns) and take lots of pictures. You might get one decent shot out of 20 and a great shot out of 50. Don’t be afraid to pull the trigger; that’s why there is a delete feature! Good luck and be patient. Regards, Ken

  • Ken Aitchison replied

PS I have found auto focus to be a waste of time; these birds are just too fast at close range. And Using a telephoto won’t get you the detail.
