This is fabulous, Ken. I’m guessing you didn’t stand/sit there holding the shutter release button the whole time, how did you keep it open for so long? Did you have any problems with condensation on your camera or lens? The leafless tree looks very good against te sky and tar trails in its rich brown tones.
Ken Boxsell replied
Thanks heaps clarkey. I use a shutter release that plugs into the camera, just switch it on and when your done…........switch it off…....I was actually close to a fire, so that helped a great deal but I also pegged a plastic bag around the camera and lens just in case.
clarkey
Thank you for the info, Ken. Does your shutter release plug into the shutter release button? On one of my previous cameras, I could screw a long cord shutter release into the button, but, not on my Pentax. Sorry ‘bout the lousy typing – lousy eyesight makes it hard to pick up some booboos!
Ken Boxsell replied
It just plugs into the side of the camera mate. Its similar to this one but I put a switch in place that activates the AF and the Shutter actuator in one movement. Rather than the 2 single push buttons. http://www.squit.plus.com/photo/remote.html
Due to the low light you have to manually focus so the AF does nothing anyway
Although screwing down the shutter button would do just as good as the small amount of time during the motion would be negligible in this instance. So it would work fine.
Some people also place a heat pad over or around the lens. That also stops the condensation. Hope that helps clarkey

Thanks again, Ken. I’ve been thinking trying for a star trail for a litle while as where I live, I can take shots which won’t have a lot of light pollutiion in them. Will have to read my manual a little more carefully and see what it can/can’t do! Have a great evening.

Stunning shot Ken. I tried years ago to shoot star trails without much success. I hoping later this week when the sky clears to give it another try.
Ken Boxsell replied
Sounds like a plan Brian….....it must be a new moon soon (here)........I was thinking of doing the same but I might head out into the country…....not so much pollution…...Thanks heaps for dropping by
Brian Carey
You welcome Ken. I was wondering if you used any artificial lighting to light the tree? I was thinking about just walking up to an object and firing the flash to illuminate a foreground object. I guess it all depends on the lighting available around you at the time. Got to experiment a little.
I’ve been wanting to try a seascape/startrail composition. Maybe tomorrow night when the sky clears here.
Ken Boxsell replied
Thanks Brian…......I used a campfire about 30 feet away….....but I know many people use artificial light….....even the tail lights of the car for a red glow…......although I dont see why the flash wouldn’t work mate
Steve Chapple
Amazing finish Ken, 64 minutes!!!! Hell what do you do in the meantime!!!!!
