Bad Hair Day
I found this green little fellow, at night in the garden, right under the back light. He comes from the family Geometridae and looks to be an Agathia metaspila.
I hope you like this wonderful little moth. Thanks for taking the time to drop by. Happy shooting Ken

Fablous Ken, looks like an Owl not a moth, Australia has such interesting creatures.. So different than here.
Ken Boxsell in reply to Mary Campbell’s comment, 4 months ago
Thanks very much Mary. In this shot its really only the angle that the shot was taken. From above he looks rather drab
ApeArt, 4 months ago
Ken this is fantastic, how do you get a good dof?
Anne Smyth, 4 months ago
what a great birdface a;most owl like – the details and textures on the legs and antennae are wonderful as well
Ken Boxsell in reply to ApeArt’s comment, 4 months ago
When shooting macro I never shoot below f16 and sometimes I may even go as far as f32. This shot was taken with the MP-E 65. You can only stop it down to f16 but this moth was very small anyway. To get a feel for the size, that twig that he is perched on is about 2mm round. I sometimes use a macro rail and might move the camera a 1/2mm back and forth to ensure that the DOF is where i need it to be. Some people actually take the 3 shots and layer them in photoshop. Unfortunately I’m not real good with software so I have never really used that method.
Thanks very much for your kind words and I hope that info helps a little ApeArt
Ken Boxsell in reply to Anne Smyth’s comment, 4 months ago
Thanks very much Anne. You are to kind
ApeArt, 4 months ago
Thanks Ken, very helpful. What is a macro rail?
Ken Boxsell in reply to ApeArt’s comment, 4 months ago
I rarely use one these days because they can be cumbersome on moving bugs etc. The do have there advantages on still objects. They sit on the top of your tripod and you attach your camera to the macro rail. Using the dials you can position your camera with absolute accuracy. Heres a pic
ApeArt, 4 months ago
Thanks Ken, this is a new thing for me. Bit expensive though!

Thank you for visiting me Ken.
This is a wonder Moth! really big, nice looking too.
Ken Boxsell in reply to ApeArt’s comment, 4 months ago
Check Ebay mate. I wouldn’t buy this one, they all do pretty much the same job. It was just the first image I found. No more than $100 and make sure that its one that goes left & right as wall as back and forth.
Ken Boxsell in reply to Linda Syms’s comment, 4 months ago
Thanks very much Linda
Ken Boxsell in reply to coffeetea’s comment, 4 months ago

ApeArt, 4 months ago
Cheers Ken. Still don’t understand what it does though!
Ken Boxsell in reply to ApeArt’s comment, 4 months ago
Lenses like the MP-E65 will not auto focus. Therefore you must move the camera in or out to obtain focus. Thats where the rail can be handy. When you extend this lens to five times 1/1000 of an inch can make the difference between a great shot and a big blur.
An EF100mm USM macro is a great starting point with macro lenses. It will auto focus but if you are not steady or if your subject has a smooth texture the lens will tend to hunt (focus back and forth). That can be a real pain so I always use manual focus and move the camera in or out to achieve sharp shot.
So I suppose the rail is really more a tool for achieving focus mate. I hope that helps, my friend
ApeArt, 4 months ago
Oh right! That is much clearer!! My macro lens is a Nikon 60mm with autofocus, so thankfully I don’t have these problems, though I struggle with dof. Thanks mate )
Ken Boxsell in reply to ApeArt’s comment, 4 months ago
Try using the highest f stop possible on that lens. The shot will certainly be slower, due to such a small aperture, so you may have to use a tripod if you don’t add external lighting. For example this image was shot using three flashes 2X 580EX + Ring flash. F16
1/200th. Not sure about the ISO, could have been anywhere from 100 through to 400. <br />Set your lens1:1 use manual focus and carefully move in or out. Give that a try mate.Happy shooting

I don’t know, Ken. I found it when i was looking through the Groups, trying to find one that dealt with a particular topic. I’m guessing if that if the Avatar is the picture used to represent a Group, then yours is it, at the moment, anyway. Go to the Groups page, and scroll down a little way – you’ll see it..

What a fabulous photograph and now we know why a moth can see so well at night – eyes like saucers! I have read that this lens is very tricky to use, yet this photo makes it look a breeze. I doubt if it was. Superb result, I am not worthy etc etc…
