Dryburgh Abbey

!The Ladye and the Knight.

I ride and I ride soft canter it flows
I ride to my hawk
soft wind it doth blow
The hawk bells do ring
as she breaks from the day
in this winter morning
at the chasing her prey
her I fear to intrude
and lure her to stay
and hood her so crude

Over rough hill and vale
o’er fence she now faces
past fields dark and rude
in light beyond pale
I continue my chases
To gallop yon fool frail
I laugh death in its faces

Until brightness flicking
from a pool in the forest
In mine eye it was sticking
I espied on a low branch
my bird come to resting
by a pool in a copse
deep and dark to its testing
Mine ear pick out faintly
and dim in the distance
A lady now daintily
Abroad now and singing

My wonder, in’truth
seems to hear so transported
a song of her youth
and her love so reported
I watched her appear
from beyond pool so stilling
her beauty it reared
my heart near to filling
For beauteous she was
in raiment so fine
that I drank in her voice
be like a fine wine
And love held me stricken
with reflect’d on her face
would she notice me there
as through longing missed
and take all that be fair
be vanish’d without trace
As her lips I long kissed
and her locks shining parted
I longed for her looks
Howsomuch damaged my heart did

Had she tarried awhile
I would have I’m sure
Presented with style
my suite so to woo her
But gone she now was
I longed to pursue her
But I held back too late
Although never to sure
Was I of this vision
vouchsafed me by heaven

My heart its derision
was surely as steadfast
that made my decision
to pursue now this quest
until I would breath last
in pursuit of my lady
if not paradise found
then surely to hades
I would soon be bound
