Solitary by Kelly Humphries

Solitary by

I was alone. A south coast beach. A cold, windy day. And then he joined me. His presence was somehow comforting, though his power was intimidating. I like to think we were each equally curious of the other – a solitary human and a solitary bird. He circled at speed and I was very lucky to capture him like this. A privileged encounter.

Oooo kelly, this is brilliant, I would say an entry into our fav group? And I’m sorry but he was NOT curious of you, he looks dead set keen on getting a feed in my humble opinion :)
    Great image, hon

  • He circled me a couple of times so maybe he thought I’d make a good feed!! Thanks for your positive comments – glad you like it :))

Nice catch Kelly. It looks like a Skua to me. Any ideas?

  • Hmm, could be Denis. I am hoping some very smart person is gonna come along here and give me the answer – maybe you are just that person! :)) I don’t know – do we have Skua’s down here in Oz? (Sorry, my bird knowledge is very limited!) Thanks for your idea!

Hey Kelly! I just had a look in my ‘Big Boy’s Book of Birds’ and I think I can say with some confidence, that what you caught there was a Razorbill, not a Skua. I stand to be corrected of course, but from where I’m standing thousands of miles away that’s what I think OK.

  • OK, Denis!! And I dare anyone out there to challenge the ‘Big Boy’s Book of Birds’!!!! A Razorbill it is! Thanks for doin some research for me :))
