Udaipur is nestled in the hills in the south of rural Rajasthan. I lived on the outskirts of the city and every day my work took me into the rural areas about an hour from the city centre. Various crops are grown in the area. Last year’s harvest was a good one. The fields are irrigated and in March the farmers cut the irrigation to certain parts of the fields. Those parts of the crop soon thirst for water, but their fate is determined. They shed the green of life, turn to beautiful gold and yield their fruit – valuable grain for flour, for chapatti, a staple of the Indian diet. The irrigated parts are allowed life for a few weeks more, but their destiny, too, is ultimately sealed golden.
