Calendar: China Signs
Throughout China, signs are used to inform, guide and regulate. As an English speaker, some of these tickled my sense of humour, however I could never rise to the challenge of writing signs in Chinese. I wanted to share some of these with you.
I photographed signs in Xian, Fengdu, Nanjing, Huan Shan, Nanjing, Chengdu and Shanghai, and have placed them in context with scenes from the same areas.
Public signs help us understand the writers and what they seek to achieve. In this way we can gain further empathy with the Chinese people. I trust you enjoy this calendar – through buying one for yourself, and viewing it each day, in full living color, throughout the year.
Each individual image (with specific comments about it) is also available for purchase on RedBubble. Just follow the links below, for each of the months.

What a fantastic idea! I’ve been to a few of those places. Unfortunately (depending on your point of view) many of the really good ones around Beijing were fixed before the Olympics. They had a whole department with the task of fixing Chinglish.

“What a fantastic idea!” Thank you for that! I do like to think about what I am going to do, and it is nice to have an idea confirmed. Keith

A splendid idea, keith!!! And Kliu is right..:)and also what you could see before and during the olympic games was so many slogangs teaching the chinese how to behave correctly..:)
Keith Richardson replied
Yes, it is amazing how the Chinese can focus on what needs to be done and do it, even if the methods leave us lost for words…
We saw the same thing with their desire to build bridges across the Yangtze River – incredible, is the only descriptive possible.
