Montefalco Series #11 – Churches big and small, old and ancient.

Italy is a country of churches. Here are some from Umbria, both large cathedral and much smaller village churches. A bell calls the faithful to prayer in each and every church.
Montefalco
Located between Rome to the south and Florence to the north, is a small walled hill-town called Montefalco.
“A little piece of heaven” some have called it, Montefalco (pop. 5600) is situated high in the Colli Martani, with a 360 degree view of the surrounding countryside. On a clear day, you may not be able to see forever, but you can see across the gorgeous Vale de Umbria to Perugia, Assisi, Spoleto, Trevi, Bevagna, Foligno, Bettano, Pissignano and a collection of other small towns and villages. Below the town lies the flood plain of the Clitunno River.
Montefalco, the birthplace of no less than eight saints, is in the middle of Umbria’s most important grape growing and wine producing country.
We lived here for a month, and my photography followed a number of themes, evidenced by the images in this series.

Hi Hilary – religion permeates almost everything in Italy, so these images are very typical of her many faces. Cheers, Keith.

This site gives great views of submitted images to what I am used to.. so this is a wonderful treat to see a threesome. Starting with left… I have a wholeness view.. so there is a particular way I like to see things.. but what you have captured is fine.. as everyone has a different eye. Soooo… the first shot.. hmmmm… the tree is also a point of reference… top of tree would be good… or even showing the tree and bell tower together in same shot would be good too.. as they are friends hanging out together in time. The top right corner gives me a size reference.. if it wasn’t there.. wouldn’t know how tall or how thick. Second.. good capture.. like the shadow that goes to corner.. looks like it is clanging as the tilt of the bell can be seen. Looks like on the same day as the sky is still clear… I see the theme as bell.. but was there someone pulling on the rope below? THird… people good for size reference. Comparative building on right is fine.. looks like birds are enjoying the view as well. Wait a couple seconds so that the person on bottom of frame is seen whole.. or out of shot. THanks for the info comments.. learning is a plus.

Did you ever consider that all steeples point to heaven? They often have bells also to call the faithful to worship or remind them of prayer time. Three great image here love the stone ones especially.

Thank you Lambchop – comments most appreciated.
Re the photo on the left – I see what you mean – it just ‘happens’ and the lack of identifiable context can be a conceptual problem. Will keep this understanding in mind when next shooting similarly in the field. K.

Thank you Byron. Re the bells. When we first arrived, we heard every bell gong, and they seemed to be competing with one another, with many churches within easy hearing distance from our medieval apartment. Within 24 hours, the sound seemed to stop. We heard it no longer, yet it still was there. Amazing. K.
