The clear, emotional connection that this portrait demands is irrisistable. The Child’s gaze penetrates far deeper into my ego than is comfortable, and that surely makes for powerful art. The painting has a formal beauty, too, that I admire, the harmony of colour and brushstroke, the way you’ve modelled form by placing different hues side by side, unmixed (Cezanne would be proud). You must look at this painting, Keith, as much as it looks at you.
