Lonely desert highway... by Keiran Lusk

On the road in my beautiful Alice the Bus (my house on wheels). This image was captured at sunset on the Stuart Highway, somewhere near Lake Hart, South Australia (my favourite salt lake). Alice the Bus and I were enroute to catch up with an old mate at the Pimba pub (near Woomera). This was part of my magical journey earlier this year from the desert (Uluru) to the sea.

Alice the Bus is a 1971 AEC Swift bus (which began service with the STA in Adelaide 38 years ago). She is a slow old girl (I typically cruise at a maximum speed of about 70km/hr) with a massive old 11.3 litre diesel engine. When I bought Alice, she was still a school bus. I spent 12 months converting Alice into my house on wheels. You can read more about the story of Alice the Bus at The Alice Project website.

Wow Keiran, I love it (now you’ll have us all wanting an Alice for ourselves!).
Wonderful processing … clean and smooth finish.

  • Hehe, thanks Rosalie. The twilight sky was so perfect that I hardly needed to process this amazing view (except for a little splash of Omni spotlight). Cheers :-)

beautiful image Kieran. Reminds me of the Tablelands Highway in the gulf country, NT. peace and serenity!

  • Ah yes… the strikingly serene landscape of the Barkly Tablelands. I can see why this image reminds you of that highway. I have also enjoyed the long, never-ending, straight Tablelands Highway a few times (it is quite a spooky drive at night too). A fascinating road through a beautiful piece of country. Cheers Laurette :-)

Nice one mate… making me a bit home sick for the open spaces of CA are you back in the centre or have you moved on for good

  • G’day Steve! Nah, I am over on the east coast now. Have I moved for good? Hmmm. No plans really. I would never say never about another stint in the Centre. But for now, I am really enjoying the ocean again. Are you still touring out there? Where are you now?

wow a road trip of a different sort. have done the vw Kombi road trip but this looks more luxurious.

  • Hehe, thanks Lois… Yeah, it is luxurious at times… and certainly never boring travelling in a big old bus. But big vehicles have even bigger problems at times with lovely things like big tyres and even bigger old engines… Allow me to demonstrate:

What a magical piece of art work, Keiran! Fantastic image – love the colours of the sky.

Great to see you back here on RB! Hope you are happy and well, wherever you are now! :)

  • Thank-you so much Anne-Marie. Yeah, it has been a while. I am happy and well, and enjoying life by the sea on the Gold Coast. Hope all is well in your world too :-)

Wow Keiran, great photography, and pleased to see that Omni is still hanging around!! Very funny, looking at the images above too!! The definition of difficult?!! Worth it though, aye?!! :))

  • Ha ha, thanks Vicki. I do love my Omni Spotlight a bit too much! Ah yes, the definition of difficult, perhaps. But somehow, even with the hot summer desert temperatures, the gazillion flies, nobody but myself to talk to for thousands of (very slowly driven) kilometres, countless tyre repairs and engine troubles… I still managed to have a laugh… AND pose for timer self-portrait shots during my unscheduled stops in Alice the Bus (although I was beginning to talk and look like Tom Hanks in that Castaway movie after a few weeks on the road!):
