Where sleeping giants lie...

Where sleeping giants lie...

I was down at Main Beach last night (passing some time before my choir rehearsal) and captured this eerie image from what is left of the beach. The wild weather last week has completely decimated the sand dunes and beaches along the entire Northern NSW and Southeast QLD coastline.

Heavy machinery is being used to shore up the dangerous scarp lines along the dunes and to provide access to the beaches again.

Location: Main Beach, Gold Coast, QLD.
Date: 26th May 2009

[Creative Effects: Colour removal, Contrast and Shadow adjustments with Photoshop CS3]

Image details:

Camera: Canon EOS400D (Lens: EF-S18-55mm)
Shutter Speed: 0.6 secs
Aperture Value: f 5.0
ISO Speed: 800

Great capture Keiran. Did you use a tripod here? The devastation to the coast line is quite incredible, even more incredible to think that they can fix it (and as quickly as they say!)... If I lived at Palm Beach, I might be a little concerned at the moment! one, two step, swim (if at high tide!) :))

  • Keiran Lusk replied

Thank-you Vicki. Yes, in fact, I used my late father’s beautiful old tripod (must be at least 30 years old!) on this night and a much more recently purchased wired remote. Yeah, some houses at Palm Beach have apparently lost up to 15 metres of their properties!

For some reason I’m seeing “Terminator: Rise of the Machines”. This is a really great shot, the silouhette just works so well against the backdrop of the buildings….scary but good scary

Great black and white. Some kids take a bucket and a spade to the beach while others get to play with big toys.

  • Keiran Lusk replied

Thanks mate! I really appreciate your words. Yeah, the big toys look like heaps more fun than a bucket and spade!

Wow, thank-you Birgitta, so very much! But I really only consider myself a beginner in this wonderful thing called photography… And I look to incredibly talented photographers and amazingly creative souls like your good self for inspiration. Thank-you :-)
