Dachau

Dachau

In 2006 I made a sombre visit to the former concentration camp at Dachau (near Munich in Southern Germany). At least 25,000 people (many of them political prisoners) lost their lives in this camp during World War II.

I cannot even begin to adequately describe the sadness that still exists in this place. It was a quiet winter’s day when I visited. There was fresh snow on the ground in places. Some of the original barbed wire perimeter fencing still stands. The stark contrast of the rusting barbed wire against the pure snow caught my eye and has become a symbol for me, of the terrible sadness of that place.

It is like the ‘barbs” on the wire represent the people desparately trying to escape…..I can just feel the heartache. I was viewing the camp and there was an actual ‘survivor’ there. I can’t even begin to imagine how it felt for him to have been a Prisoner, freed, then returning… then seeing everything they had there. The sculpture outside, “never forget”. the way the world is going today, it make’s me wonder ‘are they forgetting?” Your work is fantastic….not only are your images worth a thousand words, but a person can “FEEL” the life in them! thank you!

Thank-you Serendipity, for your sensitive and thoughtful words. This particular image is very special and important to me. One does have to question (with the way things are in the world today) whether we are indeed forgetting already. Peace to you.

I was here many years ago….a very moving place. It was disturbing to me to see ‘tourists’ having a picnic right outside the gates….maybe it was me, but that was, in my eyes, disrespectful….this is a very poinant shot…thanks for posting it.

Thank-you for your kind and thoughtful words. Dachau was certainly a very disturbing and sad place. I had to fight back tears on many occasions during my visit to this place. Peace and happiness to you Jody.

Thanks Lucinda. The wire fence and the snow provided such a stark and haunting contrast in this scene. And seemed the most appropriate representation that I could capture at Dachau.

Hey I went there last week! Although it was such a bright and sunny day with blue sky and hard to imagine the tragedy that went on there!

This is a chilling image and apt metaphor for so horrible a place. Words fail and the image steps in.
