The Minotaur
The classic mythological beast of Greek lore, whom resides in the shadows. An allussion to the beast within the darkest recesses of us all that must be searched out, confronted, and slain. This guy actually just looks like he could use a break….
Really it was part of my intention in this work to present the sort of monster that is melancholy; a darker beast of dimmer depths than it is often given credit for.
Original was done in watercolor and gouache media, on Arches cold-press 180lb. cotton rag.

what an interesting pose for such a powerful beast, the subdued tones work well with his pose- nice work

I absolutely love this.

Love your minotaur. Not a raging monster here, but worn and tired.

Even minotaurs have quiet days… great!

Thanks everyone.
The essential reason why I decided to depict my Minotaur in repose instead of rage was to play on the themes of duality and the monster inside of us. Of course the Minotaur represented the beast within- the animal urge/instinct/emotion buried down inside the labyrinthean depths of ourselves. I figured that as he’s already a beast, his beastliness is subject- due to his inate form. But I wanted to emphasize that part of the Minotaur that’s human, that is a part of us.
And besides- when no heroes are busy confronting him within his maze, I doubt as though he’s just banging around his head into the walls all day, haha. He might just sit around thinking deep, monster thoughts.
I hope I’m making some sense here….

Incredibly beautiful.

I really like this. Have you read Neil Gaiman’s ‘American Gods’? The minotaur features prominently. I think you would enjoy it.
Keelan McMorrow
No, but I’ve heard of it. A friend recently pushed the Sandman books on me, and I like it. I hadn’t thought graphic novels would interest me anymore. I was completely wrong. I most likely just out American Gods soon…
