My work is the result of constant exploration. I see art as a problem-solving vehicle, so when I’m working, I am constantly trying to figure something out. The first tool I turn to lately is my digital camera.
Using the camera as a tool for observation allows me to return time and again to small flashes of insight. I don’t always know why I get excited when I see something, but if I snap the shutter, I have the opportunity to think about it again later. As a result, my thoughts are revealed through images, as a series of repeating subjects form a body of work.
The Mirror Mirror series encourages the viewer to focus on certain aspects of subjects they might have overlooked had I not manipulated the images. I get excited when I see a ropy tangle of seaweed, or sensual rocks. Simple photo manipulation heightens awareness of interesting details, allowing you to see what initially inspired me.
