Pillars and Posts

These post are at the Western end of the South platform on Dawlish Station, Devon, England.

The railway line was built by the great engineer IK Brunel.

Where this shot was taken, the beach is directly behind me.

Hope you like it.

These supports really do get a battering from the rough seas so it is even more remarkable that they remain in place.

I dont know if they are the originals, but they sure do take a battering in the storms.

this is an extraordinary capture and is a must-see on full size. There’s such a contrast between the intricate and ornate detailing of the pillars and the … (well … looks a bit grungy) dilapidated surroundings … even including graffiti. I can just imagine the dignity and pride which the area enjoyed when new …

  • Richard Veal replied

Many thanks Lois, and for the fave also.
    Very much appreciated.
Yes, it shows the ‘art’ from the 19th century till the present day.

  • Micky McGuinness

    Micky McGuinness

Great shot Richard. The b&w really gives it the edge
if it were not for the modern signage and the graffiti you might well think that the shot had been taken a century earlier

  • Richard Veal replied

Many thanks Micky, and for the fave also.
    Very much appreciated my friend.
I was debating about the graffiti, and decided to keep it in to show the contrasts of the Architectural Artwork of over a century ago, to modern day ‘art’.
    Does that sound right?

  • Micky McGuinness

    Micky McGuinness

I think that leaving the graffiti makes it more interesting and makes you look harder at the picture. A twisty in the tail so to speak
