the rebuilt church of the assumption, pecherska lavra, kyiv. ruined during wwII (photographed in rubble by robert capa on his 1948 visit to kyiv), rebuilt 1999.
the caves monastery, pecherska lavra, one of the 3 main locales of ancient kyiv. as old as the 11th century, this is a complex of golden-domed churches, some perched over gates, hushed and ancient interiors and catacombs filled with the glass-topped coffins of mummified monks. with one’s humble candle, one can spot the odd stray skull behind a tiny window in a wall and be truly spooked by what may lie around the next unlit corner.
a unesco world heritage listed site.
