Photo taken at Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, USA. Bee Hunters are a large insect who’s diet consists of eating bees. The bee here it has caught is a carpenter bee and should give some scale on how large the Bee Hunter which is about 2 1/2 inches in length. The Carpenter Bee is about the size of the Bee Hunters head section. Before my first sighting of one, a dear photographer friend of mine first described them as the “motorcycle police of bees”. Sort of a bee on steroids. By that description, I knew what it was the moment I saw it.

Wow…Wonderful capture Kathy and I don’t know that I have ever seen one!

  • Thanks so much Sam for the great comment. Well appreciated. Believe me….if you saw one of these, you would know it and not mistake it for just another bee. They are awesome. So glad you enjoyed the photo my friend. :)

What a photo! Wow, how graphic and I don’t think I would want to get too close to either one of these… must be something to witness and I like the motorcycle police of bees description…are there a lot of bee eaters and are they successful in rounding up and catching the bees or are they totally outnumbered by the bees? Very interesting stuff, Kathy.

  • Thank you so much Kat for the great comment. Glad you enjoyed the photo and I appreciate the comment very much. Yes, there are quite a lot of bee eaters here, but many other bees to keep them well fed. The Carpenter Bees will loose out everytime. The Bee Eater catches them in mid flight. Thanks again.

Wow! Great capture and I did not even know this character existed! Very cool.

  • Thanks so much Dale for the great comment Dale. It’s always appreciated. I had no idea they existed until this past summer when a photographer friend of mine who loves to photograph insects told me about them. About a week later I saw my first one. It’s amazing. Thanks again. :)
