I noticed that sad red daisy off to the side in that vase of flowers my wife put out last week, and I kept telling myself it’d make a nice shot. While my daughter sang and played her guitar on the couch this afternoon, I went and got my camera and tripod and set up on the other end.

The western light was pouring in from a honey-tinted window above, and I did a 5-shot HDR, processed in Photomatix, then did extensive processing in PS (blurring the background, adding texture, etc.).

You know . . . that one daisy “following its own path” really adds. It adds creativity and interest to the shot and perspective. I love the “glow” quality. Well done! The shell also adds visual aesthetic fodder . . . I love it!

  • Terrific comment, Emilie! It’s wonderful to hear more than “nice job!” and get some sense of where an image took you. Much thanks!

great treatment, kevin – love that little petal on the table and the texture makes me think of an old oil painting. This is a favorite from me!

  • Nadine, your input is most valuable! You like the petal?? I debated on that one. Still wonder if it’s too much with the shell sitting there—the shell or the petal?? Hmmm!

both, definitely! the shell looks like it’s part of the artist’s composition sitting so perfectly in the arch of trhe red daisy but the petal, that looks so natural like it just this minute floated down unobserved. Love it! Top marks to your wife’s flower arranging, of course, and to your daughter for providing the meditative stillness in which this was created. I’ll have to bite the bullet and try HDR if this is what can be done. This looks more natural, not less. (as HDR often looks to me)

  • . . . ok, I’ll leave ’em both in. :D

This is a beautiful still life! The composition is original and the tones and colours really easy on the eyes. Nice job!

  • Thanks so much! Very nice comment!

Fantastic work Kevin. The reflection in the vase, your use of light and textures, the shell and the petal make this one overall delight to the eye!

  • That’s so nice! I really appreciate your detailed comment!

Wonderful still-life composition. Great light too, and love that shell :)

  • :) Thank you! The shell was an after thought that almost didn’t make it into the shot.

Marvelous still life. Looks like an old painting … I like the fact that you can live with the left side of the arrangement cut out of the picture… that appeals to me. The little shell is an interesting touch.

  • Very nice comments, Marguerite! I appreciate the detailed points.
