Pink Ribbons & Beads and the Art of Breast Cancer Treatment KazM by

This is a version of my entry into the 2007 Lilly Oncology on Canvas: Expressions of a Woman’s Cancer Journey Competition.

It shows some of the art I created during 6 months of hospital treatment for breast cancer, all done in Visual Diaries (110gsm cartridge). It was photographed with a Sony Cybershot 4.1 (with flash on auto settings). It took a lot of fiddling to get the work undistorted and to show up the difference of the two pink ribbons.
See below for more than 50 details.

I celebrated 7 years survivorship by having some reconstructive surgery so my breasts are a pair again. Yeah.

So pleased to have this work featured in Imagewriting. What an honour.

At the beginning of my journey with breast cancer I was a mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend and employee. Whilst I still fulfill all those roles, the journey has taught me self care and not to put things off. So now I am beginning to think of myself as an artist as well. I had always thought that my artistic side would have to wait until I retired. Cancer taught me to do it now!

The drawings included in my artwork (Pink Ribbons & Beads and the Art of Breast Cancer Treatment) are examples from the sketch books completed during my journey from finding the lump to diagnosis, treatment and ending with a holiday that I regarded as the end of my being “ill”. Photos of my artwork are backgrounded with pink ribbons (symbols of the fight against breast cancer). There are two lots of ribbon, one representing me and the other the support that surrounds me. The beads show that even in pairs, breasts are different, even before breast cancer and definitely afterwards. Some of the drawings directly relate to breast cancer but most are just expressions of my feelings at the time. The wide variety of types and styles of drawings shows the range of emotions experienced during my journey.

Now I am busy dragonboating, pilates, swimming, aquarobics, going to my support group meetings and investing in art materials to give myself a variety of ways to express my artistic self.

Dragonboating and the breast cancer support network have helped me develop to the point where I am taking up opportunities I would have avoided or put off in the past. Newcastle Dragonsabreast is the organisation I entered on behalf of.

To finish this submission I would like to agree with the comment by the author Robin McKinley that ‘… your own life streams through you onto the page …’. My drawings reflect the moods of my life through my pen, including my hopes, fears and dreams.
