An Opossum Child by Kay Kempton Raade

Possums are sweet babies to raise. You’ll laugh at them at this age. They play with anything and are their best at snuggling. They shouldn’t become used to all humans, but contact with their rehabber is important to their well-being.

Once you raise baby possums, your attitude changes toward these much maligned animals. They are omnivorous, eat bugs and carrion, and berries, but once they taste dog and cat food, they look for it near houses. They are slow-moving and gentle, JUST LEAVE THEM ALONE. They don’t have an attack method, so they bare their teeth, hiss, emit a bad odor, drool and eventually faint or play possum. They are the only North American marsupial and are nocturnal.

Wildlife, people, dogs, ranches, mountains, cameras.

What an adorable image this is. I remember once, I saw one laying outside my back door. I ran to get my husband and when he came back, it was gone. It was truly ‘playing possum’ because I thought it might be dead.

  • That is funny. I remember turning the car around to see if one was OK. When I got back it was walking away.

we have one that makes its way to the deck and it eats cat food. The cats jump on the railing and watch it:)))

  • LOL, brave cat. We had a cat that just moved over and shared.

So precious I have seen different ones cross my yard in the evenings, big ones with little ones, then big ones again.

  • We had one in Georgia who would growl at the dog on the deck. The dog just watched and he’d go on.
