Introducing Scoop Neck Tees and Unisex Tanks — FIND OUT MORE

Rehabbing baby opossums (Virginia Opossum and California Opossum) can be very rewarding. If they are old enough to leave the pouch for part of the day, their survival rate is good. If they are still in the pouch full time, it can be tricky. Opossums are the only North American Marsupial. They have a unearned reputation for being agressive. They don’t have much defense mechanism, so they hiss and show their teeth and when all else fails, they drool and faint. They are at the mercy of larger predators and often are killed on the roads.

Rehabbers know at what weight they have a chance. They are tube-fed opossum formula until they are able to lap up their milk from a dish. You’ve never had fun until you turn baby opossums loose in your bathtub with a dozen crickets. Wheeee
As babies, they love to snuggle and be stroked and will follow you like puppies.

wonderful info on the opossum and baby care to go along with your beautiful edited image ! I am guessing this is one you rehabbed.

  • Yes, I have his name listed as “Upchuck.” He grew a little and it was shortened to Chuck.

What a wee beauty, Kay! Would love to see one in a bathtub full of crickets!

  • Thanks, Mike. It takes them a while not to be annoyed by the jumping bugs. Once one starts to eat one, they all go crunching.

This is an adorable capture with lovely treatment. My cat befriended a baby possum. The possum came onto our deck to share our cat’s dry food and they would play together like great friends. I was surprised how cute the baby possum was, as the adults are not so cute.

  • In NC, our friends had one come in the cat door and sleep behind the dryer all day.
