Rehabbing baby opossums (Virginia Opossum and California Opossum) can be very rewarding. If they are old enough to leave the pouch for part of the day, their survival rate is good. If they are still in the pouch full time, it can be tricky. Opossums are the only North American Marsupial. They have a unearned reputation for being agressive. They don’t have much defense mechanism, so they hiss and show their teeth and when all else fails, they drool and faint. They are at the mercy of larger predators and often are killed on the roads.
Rehabbers know at what weight they have a chance. They are tube-fed opossum formula until they are able to lap up their milk from a dish. You’ve never had fun until you turn baby opossums loose in your bathtub with a dozen crickets. Wheeee
As babies, they love to snuggle and be stroked and will follow you like puppies.
