Effie and Ragnhild by Kay Kempton Raade

My great aunt wrote on the back of the snapshot:
“Effie and I on our way to school – Effie’s horse and house.”
Momence, IL ca 1908
When we were looking through pictures, My Tante Ragnhild would “tsk, tsk” when we came to Effie. She rented rooms to young women, most of them immigrants from Norway. Some of the relatives who lived nearby thought Effie was too controlling and overbearing. I think there was more to the story . I’ll bet you can tell which one is Effie. Tante Ragnhild died on her 102nd birthday.

What a marvellous old photo, Kay, and such an interesting bit of family history. Thanks for sharing this!

  • Thanks, Mike. I brought up Effie later and my great aunt would say a little more. Do you see her determined look? I think she was a force to be reckoned with.

Certainly can’t argue with this grand old shot … did you see this? Great minds, great photos of these never-antiquated relatives!! Would love to have any of these little cutters.

  • I wish they had kept more of the old stuff. Mom found some things in a ravine where they dumped machinery.
