And I didn’t think it would look like this!
Five-week-old Cookie (when her eyes opened) peeked over the edge of the baby box. It’s time for Cookie and her sibs to have a cage. They stay in about ten weeks and have another two weeks in outside pens in the woods getting used to the weather and sounds. The wild squirrels come down and meet them nose to nose.
I have gone out to the release cages to visit my sweet babies the next day and they act like I’m an evil monster who will eat them. How quickly they forget the hand that fed them.
Raising squirrel babies was my favorite time of year. Since I retired in MT, I haven’t had any new sqrl babies. I had a msg. online last night for one about 150 miles away and I would have gone for it, but when I called the lady, she had found someone else.
The fur is a donated hat. The Humane Society of the US collects donated furs and mails them out to wildlife rehabbers.
